Dissertation formatting rules are different for different disciplines. Consult the concerned authority is the best strategy for the formatting of the dissertation. Different formats are used for different discipline. However there are some basic tips that can be helpful in formatting your dissertation. These are as follows:
1. Format for the Title Page
i. Check the spelling.
ii. The title should be in uppercase, bold and centered
iii. Note down the degree at the bottom of the title page with the following statement “ Submitted in the partial requirements of the degree”
iv. The title page is not included in the page numbering list.
2. Format of the Copyright Page
i. Match with name spelling with that on the title page.
ii. Check the year
iii. Page is not counted in the page numbering list.
3. Approval Page
i. Copied signatures are not allowed.
ii. Page number is mentioned but not in printing.
4. Acknowledgement
i. The page is numbered with roman letters.
ii. Double spaced
5. Abstract
i. Write down the title on the top of the page in the center.
ii. Match the title with that on the title page.
iii. Roman page numbering is used for the page.
iv. The page number should be 0.5” to 0.75” from the bottom edge.
v. The page number should match the font size and type of the rest of page.
6. References
i. Each reference is single space and double space between two references.
ii. Provide complete information of the reference
iii. Avoid mentioning a reference twice.
iv. For authentic source follow Medline Database for abbreviation.
v. Include the full name of the journal.
7. Abbreviations
i. The abbreviations list should be in alphabetical order.
ii. Numerical abbreviations should be on the top of the list.
8. General Formatting
i. Spelling
The dissertation should not be in the review format. Check it in the review mode. Click on the “spelling and grammar” tab.
ii. Page Numbering
The page numbering starts from the introduction page as 1. The page numbers above introduction chapter are written in roman numbers. The figures and tables also have page numbers.
iii. Margins
Page margins are as follows:
· Top 1.5”
· Left 1.5”
· Right 1”
· Bottom 1”
iv. List of Tables
List of figures and tables come in a row. The figures are followed by the tables.Each table and figure should be clearly stated. Cite it if it is not your own table. It should be readable and the correct margin should be followed. Use colors but try to avoid dark colors. The heading should not be at the bottom of the page. Start from the new page.
v. Printing
The dissertation should be printed on the single side. Standard font should be used for printing. The print size is ten to twelve. Convert your file into PDF format. Check the page numbering. The paper should be bright white with water seal. The minimum requirement is 20lb weight with 25% cotton.
